I have an addictive personality. Luckily I have escaped most of the traditional addictions. I have never touched drugs, I have smoked perhaps 10 cigarettes in my entire life, I drink so little alcohol, that most of my friends claim that I cannot even say that I drink alcolhol at all; in the gambling area I buy a Lotto ticket a couple of times a year and I have never played a video game. I am quite happy glancing at my Facebook page once or twice a week only. I also have a very full life with a job, a family, a small business of my own where I give lectures and write articles on tulips and roses and produce rose jelly, have received prices and been in several magazines with my fotos of flowers, I run a show garden, I have a social life, and I help out a family with two kids who lost their father. On the surface not much addictive about my life. This is of course because most people do not know my dark secret - the HTLAL forum :-)

In the hope that there are others out there who share my dark secret, I start this thread.

You know that you are addicted to this forum when:
- it is the first thing you look at when you get up in the morning
- you spend more time here than actually studying your languages
- your middle finger goes numb from moving it around the little field on the laptop that poses as mouse
- your ideal evening contains taco and a DVD with the kids, and the PC with HTLAL on your lap
- yous read it on the IPhone while being on other continents, fully aware of the fact that it is insanely expensive
- your husband suggests you try spending some time away from the forum (oh, terrible thought!)
- you start to think yourself that perhaps it would be best with a "white day" but cannot bring yourself to do it
- you start crying because someone else on the forum has a rough time
- you spend your lunch break looking at new threads
- it is the last thing you look at before you go to sleep

- when you checked in 3 times already, and it's not even 10am in the morning.

Is there no escape?
Yes, pick up the grammar book that's been gathering dust and actually learn something!
Going now....

I know about the danger of internet addiction and I am eager to use the HTLAL forum for language communication and language discussion - without showing symptoms of internet addiction. In my case it would cause sleeplessness - which had happened in the past - so I have already taken measures some time ago to reduce my HTLAL posting quantity significantly by 50 % and my profile statistics show this! My personal advice about such a topic is: Be careful and on the lookout!

I downloaded this stopwatch/timer. I use the stopwatch when I study, so I can keep track of how much time I actually study, which is usually less than I would otherwise think. When I need a break and want to look at this forum, I set the timer for 20 minutes. When it rings, I have to get back to studying. It keeps me from spending too much time here.

And it just rang a few seconds ago, so.... Bye bye!

Brun Ugle, this stopwatch method is a good idea from preventing yourself from "hanging around" in the forum too much and get your language studies done.

Perhaps I should also reveal some tricks for people who are seriously interested in reducing their amount of internet usage.

My golden rule is that I try to stay away from using my computer in the evenings. Then I rather watch TV, listen to the radio or go for a walk outside.

To get myself to study I prefer studying at public places somewhere in the city (where there is no computer near-by) or I go to my second room, where I have a table now and enough light, so I can study there.

You know you are spending too much time here when you know most of the other forum junkies by name! ;-)

When you bookmark it so it loads up when you open your browser - but you have a tendency
to open your browser 10+ times in one day!

I really need to have less bookmarked pages (its at about 7 now haha)...
