Porque he terminado 'Destinos' y pronto (en sólo tres semanas) terminaré Pimsleur,

As such, I'm not sure whether to review them at high speed or just skip up to the point where I left off last time (as everything up to that point has been activated in my SRS since my last attempt at Spanish and thus is quite familiar to me already). I suspect I kept my Spanish goals light to keep from intimidating myself into dropping it (yet again) but now I find myself with the opposite problem. Since I'm also wondering if I made too many active study goals for Korean, I'm tempted to drop a couple of those and replace them with new study goals for Spanish instead. The other possibility is that I could just not worry about more active study materials for now for Spanish (since once my TAC 2014 goals are done I'll have Pimsleur, Assimil (with Ease), Destinos, and Michel Thomas Foundation (which I did late last year) done) and just focus on finishing Assimil (rather than dropping it partway through like I've done previously) and actually finding those media hooks into the language that will keep me studying it in the longer term. New Korean Cards: 1 Suspended Korean Cards: 40 (all Mar 2013 cards minus 1 grammar card and 1 sentence starter) Extensive Reading: - 와라!편의점 (read daily) - Twitter (a few visits each week) Team 구미호 "120개" challenge: 33 (Total = 95/121) - 7 Random Korean Expressions (16) - Korean Vocabulary with Pictures (17) "Korean Vocabulary Plus" turned out to be a bad choice of playlist. The videos are very short (1-2 min), they seem to only cover 1 word per video, there are only 12 videos in the playlist (plus a challenge video and two "menu" videos thus the "15"), and I already know those 12 words. So I've replaced that playlist with "Korean Vocabulary with Pictures" (which aren't much longer, but at least have multiple words per lesson). The new playlist also has 17 videos bringing my total back up to 121개. I now have a newfound respect for those who do this. It isn't difficult, really, it is just far more time-consuming than I could have ever imagined. (Granted most subbers work in teams, so they don't do all the parts (translation, timing, editing, layout, etc.) by themselves, but still.) It's disappointing to spend 4-5 hours (I'm sadly not exaggerating that number) working on this then watch the translated segment and see it fly by in 15 minutes (and there are several parts I opted not to subtitle in that segment since I focused on what was relevant to the game). Surprisingly the time consuming part wasn't the translation itself (though there were some vocabulary and grammar lookups), it was the subtitle timing that seemed to take most of the time (since subs are useless if they don't match up with the audio/video or don't stay on-screen long enough to read them). It was still somewhat entertaining, though, and did get faster as I got used to using Aegisub more efficiently, plus I learned some Korean in the process. On that note, if anyone is interested in English soft subs for the "당연하지 Game" from episodes 75 and 76 of X맨, I'll have some available soon (once I do episode 76 which has the second half of the game, anyway). I was originally hoping to do this (i.e. translate 당연하지) for all the unsubbed episodes (for a family member who also watches this show, but whose Korean level is far lower than mine and thus doesn't get most of what is going on during that game), but now that I've seen how long it takes, that's much less likely to happen. I also started watching "Los Simpsons" this week. I'm starting with online episodes, since the US DVDs apparently didn't add Spanish audio until season 3 and I wanted to start from season 1. This coming week will be the last week of Pimsleur IV. While I've learned a lot from it, I'll be glad to have my commute to work available again to use for other tasks. I also worked a bit with subtitles many years ago when I was still learning English so I know how time-consuming it is. Too bad I don't watch X맨, otherwise I'd gladly check out your subtitles. And by the way, I took a good look at your Hanja deck last week when I was trying to set up mine so thanks for sharing it, it helped me with some layout decisions.

Subbing is still interesting enough, though, that I spent more time on it today (starting work
on the episode 76 portion of the game). Getting the motivation to start a new project, though, might be more difficult. I'm still glad I tried it, regardless. I'm glad my Hanja deck was useful to you. The newer cards are probably better examples than the older ones, since I wasn't using a specific reference source for many of my early cards (which should be obvious by how different the content is). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

If you're interested in subbing more often and can't be bothered with cutting the segments yourself (I totally agree that it's a pain...), I recommend Viki. You can join teams where other people do the segments and you just have to fill in the translations. I think they still mostly do dramas, but there may be some channels for entertainment programs. It's quite effective for improving listening, picking up a couple of new words and gauging how much you understand.

I guess I should clarify that much of the subbing was made far easier by the show quoting
the relevant text on screen (though sometimes they trim the sentence down a bit). That said there were points here and there where I found myself adding subtitles for audio that wasn't written onscreen or for spots where the audio differed enough from the text that I felt that audio was relevant enough to be included. I wonder at times if having so much text on screen has almost become a crutch with variety shows. Unfortunately the shows that are more likely to have no text on screen, though, (dramas and sitcoms) also tend to be less entertaining to me than variety shows, so I'm less likely to watch them. 1 person has voted this message useful |
