Hi guys! So, I've been talking with someone online from Russia lately, and I really
wanted to share this link with her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=8Lm6pEhykhs&feature=channel_video_title

But, her English is not good enough to really understand what is being said, so I was
wondering if any of you guys would help me and an translate it for me.

I also noticed that the "Interactive Transcript" button only translates to German and
Italian, so there's a chance that we'd be able to have the user upload the russian one
as well.

So, here it guys:

From this distant vantage point the earth may not seem of any particular interest.
But for us, it's different.

Consider again that dot,
That's here, that's home, that's us.

On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, everyone
you've ever heard of,

Every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.

The aggregate, or joy and suffering,
Thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines,

Every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creater and destroyer of
civilization,

every king and peasent, every young couple in love, every mother and father, every
hopeful child, every great hunter and explorer,

Every teacher of morales, every corrupt politician,
every super star, every supreme leader,

Every saint and sinner in the history of our species,
Lived there, on the moat of dust, suspended in a sun beam.

The earth, is a very small stage
In a vast cosmic arena,

Think of the rivers of blood
Spilled by all those generals emperors,

so that in glory and triumph, they can become the momentary masters, of a fraction of a
dot.

Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel,
by the scarcely distinguishable of some other corner,

How frequent their misunderstandings.
How eager they are to kill one another
How fervent their hatreds,

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance,
The delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe,

Are challenged by this point of pale light,

Our planet, is a lonely speck, in the great enveloping cosmic dark.

In our obscurity in all this vastness, there is no hint tha help will come from elsewhere.

To save us, from ourselves.
The earth is the only world now to harbor life so far,

There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate.
Visit? Yes, Settle? Not yet.

Like it our not, the earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said, that astronomy is a humbling and character building experience,

There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human folly, than his distant
image, of our tiny world.
To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another,

And to preserve, and cherish, the Pale Blue Dot.
The only home, we've ever known.

*End*

Yes, I know it's a lot to write out, but any help would be appreciated.

Here's a rough translation, while it won't win any literary awards, it should be enough to get the point across.

Btw, you can find the same video here, already in Russian

I'd hate to start a new thread on this, but I don;t know where else to post this.

I've been speaking to a Russian lately, and she said this: "я с тебя херею, фигею".

I tried looking it up with many different sources, but "херею, фигею" doesn't even seem
to be a word!

Perhaps someone could shed some light on the subject?

I found this:

Вместо «Я херею» мы часто говорим «Я в трансе.

Фигеть:
см. восхищаться, удивляться, становиться невменяемым, уставать, сходить с ума

That's rather confusing. Where did you find this information anyway?

Usually you can find this type of information by googling словарь yourwordhere.

фигеть, хереть:
см. восхищаться, удивляться, становиться невменяемым, уставать, сходить с ума

You should also probably know that both words are slang but хереть is a curse word, while фигеть could well be used by preschoolers in polite company.

The above definition is most likely what your friend meant, and is/was inoffensive towards you per se, but be aware that this is also somewhat incomplete, as it can be used in another (usually) offensive manner.

Be aware of the difference:
хирЕть – слабеть, худеть
херЕть – наглеть, толстеть
фигеть - наглеть
The first is a somewhat rare archaic, but nonetheless literary word,
whereas the second one is a very common slang slash curse word.

You'll most likely hear the second word and it's less curse-like companion as охерел/офигел meaning обнаглел.

You could also hear "что-то ты похерел" meaning "gained weight",
or "что-то ты похирел/захирел" meaning you look sick or sickly thin. (No such meanings for фигеть).

P.S. If you feel that you're at a sufficiently high level of Russian and you enjoy using slang and cursewords, I'd recommend Энциклопедия хулиганствующего ортодокса by Иосиф Раскин or some other such resource that will show you the culture behind русский мат while providing you with lots of primarily dirty jokes, limericks, and anecdotes, as well as some etymology and explanations of those. Or you can stick to classics of literature, and leave picking up slang to firsthand communication, that's cool too.
