Have you tried James W. Heisig's Remembering the Kanji vol. 1? I am currently
using it while learning grammar. 2001 Kanji Odyssey is also highly recommended by other
kanji learners. I believe to be truly fluent in Japanese (or any language at all), you
have to be proficient in writing their alphabet. Just my 2 yen. :)
