Here are the rules:
- Given the last person's word, you must add, remove or replace one letter to make a new word, scrambling the letters (or not) as you please. For example, given the word fire, you could add an O and play fiore ('flowers', Italian), remove the F and play rei ('king', Catalan), or replace the E with an A to play rifa ('tear/rip', Icelandic).
- Ignore all diacritics. Well, don't ignore them, since they can be important, but for the purposes of this game they don't matter. It is okay to treat German Ä/Ö/Ü/ß as equivalent to AE/OE/UE/SS, Scandinavian Å as AA, etc., but only if the word is explicitly spelled that way.
- Also for the purposes of this game, if it looks like two letters it counts as two letters. Spanish LL, Slovak CH, Dutch IJ, Croatian NJ, etc. don't count as single letters.
- Any word from any language is permissible, even if it's from the same language as the last word or it's a cognate of the last word in another language.
- Words from languages not using the Latin alphabet must, of course, be transliterated.
Got it? Let's play! The first word is:
début
'beginning', French

EDIT: My apology for misunderstanding the rules (I thought rei came from fiore).

That doesn't work. You took out two letters and replaced them with a T.
