In my experience, the "beginner level" courses were taught by grad students who were not
native speakers of the language. There was way too much time spent on simple,
repetitious concepts, and memorizing basic vocabulary. After 10 credits (two 5 credit
courses) I made the progress I probably could have made on my own in two months of work.
I also think the optimal way to study a language is exposure every single day--which
obviously isn't counteracted by a class--but I think too many people rely on the
instructor to teach them the language; which actually hurts progress.
I wouldn't take a class in a closely related language again--too much wasted time;
albeit, I'm passed college age anyhow, so it's a moot point.
