Hi,
Has anyone here stayed with Esperanto speaking families abroad? Is this a good way to travel and learn Esperanto at the same time? I plan on doing this when I'm older. Can you recommend some websites? Also, has anyone here been the World Esperanto Conference (this year's one is in Havana)? Or have you been to any Esperanto conference? Was it a good experience? I've stayed with Esperanto speakers abroad; I recommend it. What you want is the "Pasporta servo" book for the current year.
I haven't been to UKo, but I've been to several other conferences; on the whole, they were great. I liked some better than others, but it's largely a matter of taste. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

Traveling is a good time to use and practice Esperanto. But you have to learn it now, while you are at home. Now. I have stayed at the house of Esperanto speakers. It is a marvelous experience. I participated in national conferences in Tijuana, Mexico; Montreal, Canada; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and several cities in the USA, next one near Washington, DC, the last 4 days of May 2010. I participated in 2 world conferences, the last one at Beijing, China, in July 2004. Six months ago I visited China again, and had the opportunity to meet some of the people I knew 5 years before. Being in a room with more than 2000 people from more than 50 countries, where translators aren't needed, is a fantastic experience. But I liked better the time I spent outside the conference rooms, talking with many of those people, from 5 continents ... and in a few occasions, being invited by locals for dinner at their houses. I enjoyed seeing a Chinese hostess trying to teach a lady from Italy, how to fold the dough to prepare a Chinese dish ... and an hour later eating from that dish ... It is a good idea for you to travel with Esperanto when you be older. But you should start learning Esperanto right now, and start visiting people all around the world using Internet.
