Hi, Emme! I totally understand your struggle with keeping the En/De balance for the SC. Some time ago, I
found myself much more interested in the French books I was reading than on the English ones despite having felt the opposite just a few weeks earlier (and without changing the books). I guess the are normal changes and there should come an opposite change to balance it out sometime ;-) I totally agree about the 6wc. My performNce wasn't that bad thanks to watching tv series in Spanish but other than that: nothing to be proud of. I don't know. So another month is almost over, and apart from the English Super Challenge I’ve almost nothing positive to log here. I’ve done practically nothing in Spanish, Russian and even in Swedish and I’ve struggled to finish my monthly German novel.
Moreover, I have to admit to a certain forum fatigue, which means that I willingly stayed away from these boards for weeks on end. The bright side of my choice is that it freed up a lot of time I could devote to the Super Challenge in English, which is going better than expected, to be perfectly honest. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Super Challenge Update: English Challenge Completed – Phase 1 finished and now I'll go for the Double
I’m completely taken by the Super Challenge, so much so that today I (already) reached the first step I had set myself at the beginning of May by tweeting my 22nd physical book and my 45th film/series in English. In total I’ve logged 5,274 pages and 9,052 minutes which means: Super Challenge completed! :-) Now that I’ve reached the first goal, I will aim for the Double Challenge. I know that most advanced learners had already decided for a double challenge back in April, but I feel more comfortable doing one step at a time and waiting to achieve one result before moving my target. As I anticipated in one of my last updates, this month I’ve finally read a non-fiction book: nothing special really, but it’s a beginning and I absolutely need to explore more books in this category. At long last, this month I’ve begun a scaringly long novel (which shall remain unnamed for the time being, lest I jinx the whole project) which had been sitting on my shelves for more than a decade. Its length had always deterred me, but this time, thanks to the challenge, I’m fairly optimistic that I might actually finish it. I’m about 200 pages in and I’m not going to rush it, but I will take my time, reading only a few chapters a week and interspersing it with other more manageable novels over the next few months. The German challenge is coming along much more slowly, but I’m still managing one novel a month which should guarantee that by the end of 2015 I successfully complete the challenge anyway. At the moment I haven’t got more ambitious goals. The end of August means that the challenge is 4 months old and that we’ve gone through its first fifth, so I think it’s time I posted here the list of what I’ve done so far, just like I did with my previous mini-Super Challenge. As you can see, four of the books I’ve read in English were printed with such generous fonts (and in a couple of cases with illustrations to boot) that I needed to calculate a more fair page equivalent for the challenge. Well, it’s hard to judge, really, as progress at this level seems so slow!
There aren’t many words you actually learn doing extensive reading: maybe just a couple of words a novel. I’m not saying that there are only a couple of words in a novel that I don’t know, but that only two or three unusual words may be repeated often enough and be sufficiently important for the story that you actually end up learning them. I’m more sanguine about my progress in listening comprehension, especially when dealing with non-standard pronunciation. Right now, my crux is the series Hell on Wheels: a few characters there speak with a very strong Southern accent (US). Well, saying “speaking” goes probably too far: they actually mumble their lines which makes it really hard for me to understand. But I think it’s slowly getting easier episode after episode.
