I absolutely agree with that. After self teaching myself a relatively small amount of esperanto, and realising that I was capable of holding a conversation, it gave me the belief that I was more than capable of learning another language, which I never had when learning Italian at school. While I know next year I won't have the time to dedicate to learning a language, 2012 should be the time to get cracking at it, mi esperas... 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I played a Brazilian instrument that looks like an oversized archery bow and sang in a language I don't know the name of - or even if it was a language.

I just came back from the Junulara Esperantista Semajno (JES), the New Year's event
that lasts 6 days. It was near Berlin this time, so I didn't even have to travel far. Some highlights for me were * practicing various languages in the aligatorejo. There were even 7 people who had studied Mandarin, including one Japanese girl whose Chinese accent was really good and whose German was incredibly native-like. If not for her appearance, I would not have guessed that she wasn't a native speaker, even half an hour into the conversation. Plus she wasn't very comfortable speaking English, proving that there are interesting polyglots who can't easily be reached through English. * meeting other polyglots, including one who spoke 9 languages of which only two overlapped with mine * having my first ever Swahili conversation (two of the participants had studied it) * teaching a mini-class of Swahili to 20+ interested people * watching Conlang, Que Sera Sera and "The Linguists" (a documentary about studying dying languages) * organizing a Feuerzangenbowle night (watching this classic German movie with Esperanto subtitles + drinking flaming spiced punch) * playing Go whenever I felt like it * attending concerts by Gijom, La Perdita Generacio and others * simply hanging out day in day out with old and new friends Check out doviende's blog posts about the JES: geeks-impressions/">http://www.transparent.com/esperanto/jun ulara-esperantista-semajno-a-language- geeks-impressions/ http://languagefixation.wordpress.com/2010/12/29/jes-journal -dec-27/ http://languagefixation.wordpress.com/2010/12/30/jes-journal -dec-28/ Edited by Sprachprofi on 04 January 2011 at 9:44pm 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Hi! I'd love to meet other HTLAL members off-line!
I'm going to take part in my first language festival near Genova, Italy from April 20th to April 26th. The language meeting is organized by the Italian Association for Esperanto and, therefore, deals mainly with Esperanto. However, there will be a part of the programme for other languages than Esperanto ("Lingvejo") and I'm going there mainly because of that. Lingvejo will enable the participants to speak a number of languages (Italian, German, Spanish, French, English...) and to be helped by native speakers in the process.
